A newly-formed Pietermaritzburg-based cycling academy will be taking a strong squad of young and experienced mountain bike riders to take part in the Euro Steel Drak Descent.
The sold-out Drak event is in partnership with FNB and takes place this weekend.
The Tipping Point/Brink Cycling Academy was launched in December 2021 to offer talented, young and aspiring athletes the opportunity to improve their skills and fitness levels and increase their chances of becoming professional elite category riders.
The academy will have a strong presence in the Drak Descent team event.
Under-23 rider Ryan Taylor and Omar Wilson, fellow youth category riders, Jodi Mackinnon and Luke Newlands (Youth), Masters age group riders Casper Badenhorst and partner, and managing director of the Brink Group, Mark Gutridge and his partner are all taking to the field.
In the solo category, Tipping Point Coaching Cycling coach and owner David Low, and Under-23 athletes Sven Van Zuydam and Keegan Tullis will be tackling the two-day ride.
Riding in the colours of Maritzburg College are team members Blake Frodsham, Nicholas Burczak and Cole Sellick. The youngest Tipping Point/Brink Academy rider, Luvuyo Kubheka (12), will be taking part in the MTB Challenge.
“We are proud to have some of the top local young riders under our wing,” academy coach Low said. “It is our passion to nurture these individuals and to provide the necessary support for these athletes to excel on and off the bike.
“It is going to be a jam-packed year of racing with our athletes proudly representing us across South Africa in a select number of cross-country, marathon and stage events, as well as a few road races.
“We are delighted to be in partnership with Brink Towing Systems in this new and exciting venture,” said Amanda Low, Marketing & Communications, Tipping Point/Brink
Gutridge says he is looking forward to seeing the academy fight it out and feels the academy and his business are a good fit.
“We believe that our products provide the necessary link to pursuing your outdoor passion and we pride ourselves in being part of the journey,” he said.
“Our association with Tipping Point Coaching and establishing the Cycling Academy furthers the commitment to our goal of continuous improvement, not only in our factories but also in supporting individuals to excel in their chosen sports,” Gutridge said.
